A liver is the largest internal organ as well as largest gland of a human body. It is located below the diaphragm in the right side of the abdomen. It weighs around 3 pounds and is separated into two parts, right and left lobes. The liver is one of the most vital organs and plays an important part in the digestive system. Without the functions of the liver, a human being cannot survive. There are many important functions of a liver. These include the following:

  1. It helps in storing glycogen, vitamins A, D, E, K and B12, minerals including iron and copper.
  2. It helps in bile production and excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, and drugs.
  3. It helps in the synthesis of blood proteins including albumin and clotting factors.
  4. It helps in blood detoxification, purification, and circulation.
  5. It helps in the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.
  6. It helps in removing ammonia and other toxins and transform them into less harmful compounds.

A liver has over 500 functions. Therefore, proper functioning of a liver is must for a healthy living. Let us take a look as to how does a liver helps in digestion and promotes a healthy metabolism. Its metabolic function includes the following:

  • Carbohydrate metabolism includes gluconeogenesis. Gluconeogenesis means the synthesis of glucose from certain amino acids, lactate or glycerol.
  • Hormone metabolism.
  • Synthesis of fatty acids, cholesterol, and lipoproteins.
  • Ketogenesis which means the breakdown of ketones to fats.
  • Protein metabolism.
  • Synthesis of plasma proteins including albumin, globulin and so on.
  • Synthesis of urea which means converts ammonia to urea.
  • Production of red blood cells in the first trimester of a fetus.

The liver, when combined with other important parts of the organ such as the pancreas, gallbladder, small and large intestines, regulates a proper functioning of the digestive system. Any sign and symptom related to a liver disease should not be ignored and given immediate attention. Rush to your nearest clinic for the checkup in case of any digestive issues you suffering from. The reason could be a liver damage or you might need a surgery for its treatment. Liver surgery is critical and if treated at an early stage, it can prevent the formation of other diseases. Do not forget that ‘Prevention is better than Cure’.
